Session 4 - What a (sand) blast

Pacific Ocean Pistol River

Drove as far as Eugene last night and Wind Mountain Pete’s family put me up again - I think I might be beginning to overstay my welcome. This morning we completed the drive down to Pistol River. The country south of Eugene sure looks like NorCal (I guess that shouldn’t be a surprise as NorCal is right next door).

Even though you are anticipating that first glimpse of the ocean, it is breathtaking every time! Clear blue sky, crystal clear blue water, 20 knots sideshore and waist to shoulder high waves! We stopped and gawked for a good 15 minutes and I said to Pete, "Lets just launch here, we would have the whole break to ourselves!" But in the end we decided to press on to Pistol River.

I managed to stay upwind of my launch, get in some backside rides, feel comfortable on the outside, get a few jumps in and get in some frontside riding. This was an awesome day!

It was hard to leave the Gorge, but Pistol River is worth it. I am currently getting blasted (with sand) and having a blast in Pistol River.

Quote of the day. Tourist: "The wind is unrelenting!"

I used to love Oregon, now the love affair has deepened.

Weather Conditions

Solid wind on the beach and at the launch, a little lighter right in the impact zone and off the hook on the outside!

Super fun day - nothing too intimidating. Nice clean faces maybe head high at times. Six to eight rows of waves on the way out. Back side AND front side riding was more than possible today - it happened! Big jumps were possible to starboard.

We could not have asked for a better first day on the coast - it was awesome. With this session WMP had the chance to expel some demons left over from a near drowning experience at Manzanita and I had a chance to step up my ocean sailing a level - we were both all smiles at the end of the day. The Big Wave Dave crew were all out in force (ripping as usual) and a special "thank you" to "winddoctor" for patiently answering all of my questions (on the launch, camping and stuff in town).
