S10: Super Smooth (Change is Good)

Pacific Ocean Pistol River

Started the day at Cape Sebastian, but it was too windy to SUP when I arrived around 9. Swell was beach break on the low tide. There was a lot of debating (and a coin toss) on where to sail – the cape or Pistol River. The more experienced sailors favouring down-the-line at the cape and the others favouring the fun factor at Pistol River.

Some rigged and launched at the cape, but it looked like a lot of work. Most of those who launched ended up following to Pistol River to join in the ‘fun’ in the end.

About half way through the session we had to glue a slash in Jessie’s foot closed. Good thing as this let him return to the water for the afternoon ‘loop fest’!

Quote(s) of the day:

BWD (commenting on the morning conditions at the cape): "That looks like I would be swearing the whole time.”

Steve (commenting on the morning conditions at the cape): “Even Dana isn’t catching any waves!”

Me: “Why don’t we sail Pistol in the morning while the swell is working the shore on low tide and return to the cape on the afternoon high tide?”

Mark: “WOOOOOOAAAAAAHHHHHHH! That’s crazy talk. We only do the cape in the morning and the Pistol in the afternoon.”

Me: “But we sailed the cape yesterday evening.”

Mark: “Yes. But that was an usual day.”

Me: “Maybe today is too.” [there was good swell and wind at the cape when I passed by about 6 pm, but nobody had the energy for a second/third session]

BWD (commenting on the conditions at Pistol River): “That was very unusual for Pistol, smooth and relaxing.”

Weather Conditions

Wind **** (out of five stars)

Gradual up and down throughout the session building from mid-4’s to 4’s.

Water/Waves **** (out of five stars)

Low tide to start made for modest shore break and easy launching. Getting out was easy, if you timed it right. The wind swell/waves were very well organized, set-up in lines, and were smooth. Resulting on lots of front-side down-the-line opportunities. Super fun.

Jumps ** (out of five stars)

Classic Pistol River ramps were presented, but some avoided in favour of making it to the outside.

Stoke **** (out of five stars)

Steve, Jessie and I were all stoked to sail a different spot and Pistol River looked quite playful today! OW arrived from Ontario after a 40 hour drive and was all smiles both before and after taking to the water. When Jessie landed his back-to-back endo forwards you could clearly hear (Big Wave) Dave and Mark (The Law) hooting from atop ‘the rock’ way out on the water (even above the wind noise)!
